Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
