Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
