British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
